I don't know about you, but cookie jars shaped like animals used to freak me out when I was a wee kidlet.  It seemed wrong to decapitate a cute critter to get at my sugary baked treats, even if said decapitation were temporary.  I much preferred the cookie jars shaped like houses because tearing a roof off of a house to get to a cookie made MUCH more sense to me.

Ahem.

It's my pleasure to introduce this huge vintage 1950s (1958 to be precise) owl cookie jar for your viewing pleasure.   We've dubbed him The Academic, but a little research has reveled his name to be Collegiate Owl.  Made by the American Bisque Company, he stands a little under a foot tall.  That's a lot of cookies.  He's sporting a mortarboard, pale blue speccies, and a book with 'cookies' written across it.

These black leather beauties, paired with opaque black tights, would make yer gams go on and on and ON.   The 3" slender heels call for cabs rather than public transport, but we all have occasion to spoil ourselves.   Love the sleek loafer details on the vamp.   The pointy toe silhouette (paired with a fuller skirt) is making a comeback for Spring/Summer 2011, why not try the look out early for a smidgen of the price of a new pair?

****SOLD**** Lovely little Victorian-style picture brooch, c. 1960s.   It is signed Ainsi Soit Nous on the back.  The metal is not marked, but has the appearance of tarnished silver or pewter.   The brooch measures 2" x 1-3/4" and will hold a small oval photo.  There is some wear on the back, but the pin is in good condition.   This would look very sweet pinned to a stocking or as a gift topper.

This 2-tiered Glo-Hill chrome tray features bakelite feet, handles, and center post.  Shiny mirror-finish shallow square chrome trays with rounded corners are 7-1/4" square and 9-1/4" square respectively.  Bottom tray has attached endpieces that serve as both handles and feet.

Tapered bakelite center post with chrome accents flares out at the top to become a 1-1/2" diameter carrying knob.   All bakelite is a beautiful marbleized caramel and brown color.  Unit stands 10-1/4" tall and comes apart via a screw on the bottom for easy cleaning.

Underside of lower tray carries its original sticker that says “Gourmates styled by Glo-Hill Canada.”

The Glo-Hill Company began as a manufacturer of fine Bakelite tableware and barware and was founded in Montreal, Canada in 1946 by brothers Sol, Paul and Leo Globus and brother-in-law Harry Hill. Together, they formed the company, GLO-HILL. They designed and produced many different design lines of fine tableware, barware and giftware, marketed under different design names. This particular Bakelite serving tray is one of those designs and was called Gourmates The company produced Bakelite barware and flatware until the 1950's.

Oh, Montreal, how I love thee.  You're just bustin' at the seams with talent: culinary, artistic and sartorial.  

I was totally HOUSING something veggie, soft, and delicious at Burritoville a few weeks ago when I chanced upon a 2nd floor installation of Jp King's works.  Delightful!  I snagged one of his luggage tag business cards.   In the way of such things, it migrated into my coat pocket, nuzzled into a corner, and was forgotten til this morning when it decided to attach itself to my buspass and them slip-splurrssh into a puddle on the bus floor.  I picked it up.  THAT'S how nice the card is.  Then I internetted and enjoyed both PaperPusher Print Collective and his eponymous site.

It was while exploring this second site that I chanced upon some very nice packaging illustrations King has done for Dolbeau, a Montreal company which handcrafts gorgeous men's accessories, including Customizable, Reversible and Adjustable bow ties!   (Victorian caps are all mine.)

I am in love love love with this dapper bit of sartorial fun, called the Leduc.

If I had a swan-like neck I would rock it but HARD. Alas, the same gene pool which bestowed me with lustrous hair, slender fingers and a decent waist to hip ratio has also saddled me with my towering 5'2"-ness (kids pants, much?), myopia, and a shortish neck.    Jaunty bow tie?  Tis not to be.   However I do know people who sport bow ties with panache and will certainly be sharing this link especially since Dolbeau has free shipping worldwide  and many of their Casual Class bow ties are on sale!  (scroll halfway down the page).

Vintage Caravelle watch pendant necklace.  The timepiece isn't working, but it's so darn pretty you won't care!  The chain measures 30" in total length - perfect for peeking out from under your scarf.  The pendant measures 1.5" in diameter, with a goodly part of that comprised of gold-tone filigree.  The back features a very wearable deco sunburst pattern - so this is like getting two necklace looks in one.

Why not try a striking touch of  Aegean blue/ turquoise and brass?  I used this gorgeous Italian-made vase on one of our wedding tables, and stuffed it with scraggly yellow blooms.  They POPPED against the high gloss glaze.   I love the little brass fan handles!   It stands about 7"  in heigh.
